I want to make a Hello Kitty scarf for a friend but since HK patterns are really hard to find for some reason, I’ve decided to improvise and piece together parts of patterns for my own scarf. Simple enough. And yet, no matter how hard I try, one crucial part is eluding me: the base! I want to achieve this large blocky/checkered pattern:

But the only pattern I’ve been able to find with a similar-looking scarf is, surprise, in Japanese. It looks fairly simple, but I can’t tell from those small pictures if it’s all in knit stitch or in stockinette or what. So. Any of your knitters out there know where I could find a similar pattern? Or do you have any ideas of your own on how I could recreate this one? Thanks!
It’s not stockinette, but you can use any stitch you like. Stockinette tends to curl, so I only use it on a sweater or something else that’s going to get sewn together.
Figure out how wide you want it to be, then cast on enough stitches to get that size piece. Work however big you want the space for the kitty face to be, then divide the number of stitches in half and do half in the same color and half in another, until the scarf is the length you want.
Print the page with the kitty face directions, and blow it up on a printer until you get the size you want. Get some pieced of felt from a craft store or even WalMart, and cut them out. You can machine stitch the piece together, then attach it to the scarf.
This is something you can easily do on your own. I just might make one for my daughter-in-law who is a major Hello Kitty Fan.

I need to knit a scarf for my best friend for Christmas and I need a pattern. I am broke and only have one full skien of useable yarn. I would like to try something besides garter stitch, I use it all the time. I want to do something unique and fun, just like my best friend. And the scarf needs to be something that I can do very quickly - I only have three weeks at the most. Thank you.
row 1 knit five, purl five, knit five purl five, knit five
row 2, purl 5, knit five, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5
do this for 6 rows
next row, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5
next row, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5
Do this for 6 rows
you now have a nice basketweave scarf started. repeat these rows until you run out of yarn. looks good, just as fast as the garter stitch, and if you do not know how to purl, go to knittinghelp.com for instruction.

i’m knitting this scarf as a gift for my friend, and i need a pattern that won’t take too long, is pretty simple, and looks great on a guy.
Hi. I’m in the exact same boat. I chose a pattern out of the book "Knit Ponchos, Wraps, and Scarves" by Jane Davis (pp 57). I casted on 28 stitches.
R1: (K1,p1) rep across
Rs 2 and 3: K
Repeat rows 1-3 until you reach desired length.
Her pattern is for an ascot so I adapted it a bit for a man’s scarf.
It’s coming out nicely and very masuline. I twisted 3 threads together, a deep forest green, a soft black, and a handspun and dyed blackberry color.

I am looking for a knitting pattern for a scarf that has a ruffled /scalloped end. The rest (middle) of the scarf would be just a knit purl. Any ideas where I can get this pattern or how to do it??
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is a scarf that has what you mentioned. The pattern is there and so are the directions. Email me if you have any problems making it so I can help you.. You forget making the lettering on it and you don’t have to make it as long or even longer.

I’ll explain as best as I can. I want to knit a scarf diagonally by casting on a stitch then increasing every other row so that my multi colored yarn ends up diagonal (until the triangle reaches the correct size for the width. I also want to include a rib pattern in this design that travels vertically along the length of the scarf trying for more of a compact rib instead of the spaced out ribs.
Don’t get this confused with knitting diagonal ribs, I don’t want the colors to travel width wise.
I think I can figure out the body by k2, p2, and purling every other row or something for a stockinette garter stitch rib but I’m, not sure how to plan out the triangular end pieces to start and then to finish the ends.
I will be working with a right and wrong side to help keep track of things (like ending the beginning triangular piece with the wrong side then starting on the right side for the body, also ending on the wrong side of the body then starting on the right side of the last triangular end.
If you can also offer some more sophisticated rib patterns into this design that would be appreciated. I want to try to move beyond the garter stockinette ribs lol.
There are a number of variations of rib stitch.
You could try K1, p2, k2 across, then assuming odd number of stitches, on the back you would p1, k2, p2. It sort of spaces out the rib stitch and give a ridge effect but I don’t know the name of it.
Another is fisherman’s rib - p1, k1 into stitch below, repeat across the row then on the reverse side you purl across the entire row. The end effect is quite a thick scarf. Alternatively some k1, k1 into stitch below then k1,p1 on reverse row.
Try a search for rib knitting as well as for scarf knitting and you should come up with quite a few variations.
good luck

i want to knit myself a scarf but i am not to sure what pattern to do help please.
KISS - Keep It Super Simple!!!
I know garter stitch is totally boring, but it is the simplest of patterns. Just cast on the number of stitches that will make the width you want and do every row in knit.
or you can do a stockinette for a reversable different on each side scarf, knit one row and purl the next.
Block pattern, knit 5 stitches, purl 5 stitches then on the reverse row, knit the purled and purl the knitted for a total of 5 rows then change to the opposite block pattern.
All very simple and easy and won’t take much time at all to make. Put fringe on the ends?

I want to knit a scarf that has a v pattern such as in this video I found <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chFWCePFAdk> but I can only seem to knit this <http://z.about.com/d/knitting/1/0/q/-/-/-/garter_stitch_scarf.jpg>
I am not sure if the first video teaches me how to knit the v pattern but it’s not working.
Thank for the help!

VVVVV <– that’s kind of the pattern I want
What you will have to do is figure out how many of your "V’s" you want across your scarf, do you want a space between them and how many regular stitches you will have at each end. Once you have figured that out, you are ready to. I am going to make you a diagram of several "V’s" to show you how to do it. There will be v for your knit stitches and a * for your purl. There will be a 7stitch wide V and a space between but you don’t have to do the space if you don’t want to.
v*******v*v*******v*v*******v*v*******v*
*v*****v***v*****v***v*****v***v*****v**
**v***v*****v***v*****v***v*****v***v***
***v*v*******v*v*******v*v*******v*v****
****v*********v*********v*********v*****
This is the example and you can make the V as wide as you want

The lace pattern is:Row 1 & 3: K2, P2., Row 2 *YO, K2tog,P2, rep, Row 4: *K2tog, YO, P2, rep.
i think that since the odd rows are ribbing, it might not matter… you should be able to just knit it like regular. Knitting in the round automatically makes stockinette stitch, which means for all of your even rows you should switch to purling… but i dont think it should matter with this pattern

I’m trying to find a knitting pattern for the vest from the longest running Sci-Fi Television show Doctor Who. The Seventh Doctor wears it and I’m trying to find a pattern.
I meant vest not scarf…
Here’s a chart for the question marks: http://community.livejournal.com/crafty_tardis/81498.html
P. S. You can use any vest pattern and add the zig-zags and the question marks from the chart. Use the authentic colors and go for it.
